The Surinamese police are investigating whether a gold mining operation near Gunsi might be connected to the fish mortality in the Saramacca River. At this location, gold is extracted using the so-called heap-leaching process, which involves chemical substances. An investigation team visited the area on Tuesday, July 28th, to determine if pollution could have originated from this mining site.
